Light on this subject... - Anne Maragos - Nehalem, OR USA
This floor lamp design was what I've been searching out for upwards of 3 years: graceful contemporary style, brown hardware with linen-like beige shades. The lamp I received had all the right elements, and all parts were present except light bulbs (not included with the purchase).

But a crucial part arrived broken, for two reasons. First, the original factory packing box was the shipping box - which was inadequate. While all parts were pretty well protected inside, the contents were not impact-proof. And the box had come from China, via Mississippi and Kentucky. The second cause of problems was that the materials used were shoddy. One of the brown plastic bulb holders had completely sheared off. This was the only part broken, but it was critical for the whole lamp. The bulb base was fixed to its metal support bracket and was neither to be glued, nor removed and replaced with something easily obtained at a hardware store.

I sent it back for a refund. While the style was perfect for my taste, the construction quality would appall anyone who wanted a safe electrical item.

Arts and Crafts Lamps and The History of Art Nouveau

The Arts and Crafts era began in England during the late 1800's. Simple clean designs and individual craftsmanship that employed aspects of nature were the main characteristics of this design period. This new movement was in direct contrast to the mass production of products that was made possible by the industrial revolution. This new art, (Art Nouveau in French) was also many ways a relief from the lavishly ornate designs of the Victorian era which preceded.

The industrial revolution had dehumanized the process of manufacturing especially as it relates to home decor products. It broke down the work process into various components by processes called the "division of labor". Workers were able to work on only a portion of a complete product. The Arts and Crafts movement was a rebuttal of this dehumanizing process as it was concerned specifically with the human element of a person creating an entire product from start to finish.

The architect Augustus Pugin (1812-1852) was one of the first outspoken leaders in speaking against the dehumanizing aspect of the industrial revolution. He was followed by other proponents of these ideas: John Ruskin (1819-1900), William Morris (1834-1896) and Phillip Webb. Morris was the most popular name associated with this movement.

This new style of art spread throughout Europe and was named Art Nouveau (new art) by the French. Each country and region had its own styles and variations of this new art movement.

During the late 1800's, America was basically importing its artistic and home furnishings designs from England and Europe. Colonial and Shaker designs were the only truly American styles at that time. Gustav Stickley's simple and clean furniture designs exemplified the Arts and Crafts style in America.

There were a number of remarkable lamp companies of that period. Their products are very collectible and highly sought after today. Many of these collectible Arts and Crafts Lamps or Art Nouveau Lamps that sold for $ 15 - $ 25 in the 1920's may now sell for many $ 1,000's and much more.

Can't believe it is still being sold! - Phyllharmonic - Branson, Mo United States
I received my light about 12 months ago. I was shocked to see that they were still selling it. I experienced the same problem as others, the knob that tightens the lights arm is completely stripped after one try to tighten it. I actually had them send me another one and it did the same thing. Also I saw that others had mentioned how far down the cord the switch was. This is also a problem. I would not recommend this product.



Only good as a nice-looking paper weight - Linda - United States
The lamp looks very lovely. Unfortunately, it has a fatal flaw. The knob assembly that adjusts the angle of the lamp is not only made of a soft steel, but the screw is also of a very small diameter. The obvious result: When you attempt to tighten the lamp (even ever-so-lightly), the threads immediately strip-out. Result: The lamp is now a paper weight. This was such an obvious flaw, the designer must of been on some heavy medication to have missed it.



Maybe not a museum piece... - anole eye - Swamps
This lamp works well for our piano, and hasn't caused any fires. Is that a good review? It is functional and attractive for it's price.

The only reservations I have are:

1) The knobs are a bit cheaply made and hard to tighten and
2) The switch is bit far down the cord. If the switch was on the base or the head we wouldn't have to reach down behind the piano to turn it on and off.

Considering the price, not a bad lamp.

Added 2009/11: Considering the *current* price, I wouldn't touch it.
