Antique Floor Lamps - World's Best Reading Lamps

First let us define ANTIQUE FLOOR LAMP. Of course a floor lamp normally rests upon the floor as opposed to resting upon a table, the wall or the ceiling. The general definition of an ANTIQUE means something from a bygone era. This places the term outside the legal arena and into common usage. "Era" is general perceived and is defined as a long indefinite time period which also works out perfectly for this general definition. This general definition works perfectly since any identification of an "Antique Floor Lamp" is fairly useless without some time period designation normally in the form of circa 1905 which literally means "about the year 1905". So I will use the term ANTIQUE FLOOR LAMP on this basis and often substitute it with the term VINTAGE FLOOR LAMP. This discussion does not address modern reproductions of antique lamps which is another subject to itself.

More and more people are learning to appreciate the quality and styling of antique floor lamps especially as most of the ones being produced today are molded plastic and literally made to be thrown away. Most all floor lamp makers from the turn of the century made their lamps from heavy metals such as cast iron, brass, steel and cast zinc sometimes combined with marble, onyx, glass and stone. Our lamp shop regularly restores these antique floor lamps for resale as well as for our customers' own use. From our 30 years of experience it is clear that many of these antique floor lamps will last for hundreds of years. The electrical components, the fabric shades and the painted finishes often need restoration but most were made with such fine quality, that they are a much better value than brand new high end lamps that sell for many hundreds of dollars. You will find some other surprises about these collectible works of art below.

High quality, beauty and function were powerful influences on the makers of antique floor lamps. Many people are aware of their outstanding quality and beauty but completely surprised about the highly developed functional and technical characteristics. There are far too many examples to list here but I will mention a couple of the more important ones.

The brightest lamp that you can purchase today in any store was designed and made circa 1920. It is also the most versatile lamp that you can buy anywhere. Further it will outlast most any modern lamp that you can find at any price. This antique floor lamp is known by a numerous names such as: 6 Way Floor Lamp, Reflector Floor Lamp, and "JUNIOR". The design begins with a heavy metal base sometimes highly decorated with an upright tubing leading up to a central electrical socket surrounded by 3 arm lights (4 lights total). The central light takes a 3 way bulb (low-medium-high) that is often a MOGUL size which is larger than a standard socket with higher wattage (100-200-300 watts). The three arm lights are controlled by a switch that can turn on separately just 1, 2 or all 3 of the arm lights. Further, many of these JUNIORS had a small light under the base which provided a very subtle night time floor light operated by a foot switch mounted on the side of the base. As if this were not enough, the central top socket is encased in a large metal cup which holds a white waffle patterned glass bowl that reflects light upward to bounce of the ceiling. A fabric or silk shade (also called JUNIOR shade) rests upon the glass reflector bowl to reflect light downward for reading. A single arm light can provide a simple night light or at it brightest setting, it can light up an entire room. There is no brighter lamp or more versatile lamp available anywhere today and it was designed and made nearly 100 years ago!

One of the best reading lamps in the world was also designed circa 1920. It has been highly imitated but it still remains unchallenged. The Bridge Arm Floor Lamp or Bridge Lamp has a typical floor lamp design with metal base and upright standard which can take the form of various types of decorated tubing, twisted iron rods, etc. At the top of the standard is a decorative cast metal arm with a graceful arc or curvature which ends with an electrical socket pointing downward and covered by a fabric or glass shade. This has the effect of offsetting the light by about 14-18" from the upright standard at the same time lowering it so that it is closer to the reading material or work project. The result is an excellent reading lamp or work lamp which places the light bulb very near the task at hand. Many of these Bridge Arm Floor Lamps have convenient pull chains which hang below the bottom of the lamp shade for ease of operation.

Of course there are many other kinds of antique floor lamps such as torchiere, two light, curved arm, swing arm, etc. Even the oldest and most dilapidated of these well built heirlooms can be brought back to life with some scrubbing, sanding, painting, rewiring and sometimes soldering or welding.

If you want to buy a lamp that you can give to your grand kids, consider buying an antique floor lamp.

The Best Debut Album of 2009

With the year of music officially behind us, I'd like to take a few moments to recognize the best musical debuts of 2009. There were many successful artists in a number of different genres, and the breakthroughs they made gave us hope for a bright future filled with some exciting music.

Here are three of the best music debuts of 2009.

The XX came out with their self titled album and their sound is familiar and unique all at once. The chilled out beats complement the lo-fi guitar and male/female vocals that make this album cool and relaxing. Take a listen to it if you've never heard this, and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Another great debut CD during 2009 was Mumford and Sons' Sigh No More. This band hails from London, but you'd never know it after hearing their sound. They can be best described as an indie rock band with an infusion of bluegrass. One comparison I've heard them draw is to that of the Dave Matthews Band. With vocals resembling the legendary singer and some similar instrumentation, it comes as no surprise.

One last debut CD worth mentioning that was released in 2009 is Actor by St. Vincent. This female led group brings us some of the most beautiful vocals we've heard all year, and many are in agreement with this belief.

The above albums are just a few of the many great debuts we saw during the year. As social media and other forms of technology allow music to spread more rapidly, there's no doubt in my mind that 2010 will bring us just as many promising musical debuts, if not more.

Grandpa's Tobacco Jar (1957) In English and Spanish

He sat down in his sofa-chair-behind the tall reading lamp, that extended an inch or so over the back of the chair, taking one of his wooden pipes laying in the standup ashtray next to his chair, and stuck two matches together-Chick (his grandson) sitting on the couch observing him from the corner of his eye, while watching a western on television, he had previously filled the pipe with tobacco from his tobacco jar he kept on his bedroom dresser, and once lit he dropped the matches into the ashtray, for once not missing it, and having it land on the floor: mumbling and cussing all the time under his breath, like who-knows-what, only he knew what he was saying, the Old Russian Bear, as Chick called him, figured he simply did it out of habit, or perhaps talking to his demons.

"Dont ya go-a turin' da channel ven I gone, ya her-me!" he said to Chick as he stood up, walked through the bedroom to the bathroom, never once looking at Chick longer than a half-second, it wasn't a question, although it might have sounded like one, it was a statement, and perhaps in a light form, a statement-question, yet rhetorical, not necessarily meant to be answered verbally, only acknowledged with a look, or nod of the head. Once old grandpa (not quite five-foot tall) disappeared into the shadows of the bathroom door, now open for a spell-soon to be shut, Chick quickly got up and hightailed it to the kitchen knowing the direct route to the icebox, and knowing exactly where the pears and apples and oranges were, and out they come one by one into his side pockets of his robe, and next, he rushed back like a deer to where he was sitting, picking up his old apple, as if to disguise his race against time, then a second later, grandpa appeared, he was mumbling and cussing again, and Chick looked up from his position on the long coach, a flat affect on his ten-year-old face as if he had never left, his heart hardly pounding, grandpa brushing off the ashes from the sofa-seat of his sofa chair, his eye caught Chick eating the apple, unknowingly, the next three apples he had put in his robe pockets, would appear one by one-(in due time), to him as if he was eating the same one-slowly; it was simply, he didn't' want his grandpa to discover the principle of his deception at its most fundamental obscurities, lest he be made fun of for eating him, and his mother and his brother Mike-whom all lived together as if in an extended family, out of house and home, because the Old Russian Bear took a disliking for that chopping and chewing noise and seeing and monitoring (which he didn't have to do, but seemingly by compulsion forced to do) eating, apple after apple, after apple, and you can add that pear and orange in there, it annoyed him, and made him mumble and cuss more. Grandpa took another look, Chick now blinking as if he had something caught in his eye, he had eaten the apple core and all, as he had learned to do-part of the three-year deception, from ten to thirteen, and had a new apple in his hands, this time grandpa looked a second and a half, said, "Humm...mmm..." as if he was trying to figure out the charade, then back to those new formed cuss words, half in English and half in Russian, so no one could ever figure out completely what he was saying, he had his own black book of cuss words, it would have seemed, somewhat coded.

Was Chick a sneak? Yes, oh yes, sneaky he was-likened to a spider to a fly (but sneaky because it was called for, out of demand for the right to eat his fruit and watch television at the same time his grandpa was watching it), and he'd tell you so right to your face, upfront, if you'd had asked him, he'd even had told you himself, "Boy am I sneaky, but I got to be..." and had you been there, you might have even caught him mumbling something to that effect, as his old grandpa sat bolt upright in that sofa chair, watching 'Da Long Ranger,' or 'Hop-along Cassidy,' (or dat cowboy vith da white hair) as he'd referred to the two of the many westerns he'd watch-peacefully watch; yet, and nothing nowhere, and nobody anywhere in the world anymore could anguish or disturb him, and consequently he got a rest from that automatic cussing he did, lest they wanted that black book of cuss words to come out and the echo sounding like drums beating and not knowing exactly what they were saying but knowing they were cuss words of some nature, because he was in his tomb of silence, for the evening, and forevermore loving it, and God forbid, should you disturbed him at this sacred moment.

Spanish Version

El Tarro de Tabaco de mi Abuelo
(1957)

5 Lousy Places to Put Your Piano

When you first bring your piano, you're likely to be very excited about your new purchase, and you should be! Buying a piano is an exciting investment in your future as a musician. But you must be careful not to make a common mistake and put it in a bad location. Here are five places where you should not put your piano.

These are applicable to both digital and acoustic pianos.

In a heavily trafficked area

Your piano is a complex, finely tuned instrument, and likely the most expensive piece of furniture in your house. You should avoid placing it anywhere where people will walk past and scratch it, bump it, rub up against it, etc. Be sure to avoid placing it where swinging doors will hit it.

Near a pool, bathroom, or kitchen

Water and humidity are like cancer to a piano; they will eventually destroy it. You should avoid placing your piano anywhere where the humidity changes are fast or violent, and of course avoid anything where it could come into direct contact with water. For example, avoid anywhere near hanging plants, aquariums, etc.

Near a fireplace or furnace

Heat is also a killer of piano wood, so you should avoid placing your piano within ten feet of a fireplace or furnace. You should also avoid radiators or vents where hot air will blow on the piano. You generally want the area of the house with the least variation in temperature.

In direct sunlight

This one might be more surprising to some people, but you want to avoid placing your piano in any area where it will receive direct sunlight. Not only can the heat warp the wood, but it can discolor or fade the finish of your piano, detracting from the appearance and value. The exception to this rule is when you keep the piano covered, but even then it's perhaps not the best idea.

Near any doors or drafty windows

Air blowing in from outdoors brings three things you don't want anywhere near your piano: dust, heat (or cold), and moisture. For this reason, you should avoid anywhere near a door to the outside of the house, or near any drafty windows. In most cases, outside walls are to be avoided in general.

A piano is a significant investment, but by taking a few simple precautions when you select the placement of the piano, you can ensure that you and your family will be able to enjoy it for many years.

Different Lamp Styles

There are different lamp styles that will brighten your room in different ways, but more importantly you need to make sure that it will complement your home decor. Choosing the wrong lamp may cause the entire appearance of your room to go completely out of sync. Depending on what bedroom settings you have, you need a table lamp that will fit your personal style. If your bedroom tends to be more contemporary and artistic in nature, consider a modern style bedside table lamp. These types of lamps are simple and sleek with a clean look. If you have a country feel to your home, then you should consider country-style table lamps. You will typically find that the base of the lamps have a lot more designs to choose from than the modern ones. These style of lamps also come in pastel colors.

The third type of lamps that we will get into is antique lamps. The authentic antique lamps tend to be more rare and worth thousands of dollars. The reason why they are worth so much is typically due to the fact that there is some sort of history attached to it. These lamps will increase in value over time as well, so you could view your purchase as an investment. On the other spectrum, you can get a manufactured antique lamp that is less expensive but yet still conveys the message you want communicated. It's really a matter of personal preference. Most people will not be able to tell the two apart, so if you don't care about authenticity then you should consider getting the manufactured antique lamp.

Be sure to go to all of your local brick and mortar stores to see all the different types of styles that are out there before making your purchase. Once you get a feel for what type of lamp you want for your home, look for your lamp online because you will be able to save least 20-30% off retail prices. I typically save up to 50% when I shop online because I cut out the middle men. Good luck on your quest for that perfect lamp for your home.

Lamp Shade Styles and Shapes

A little ground work for discussion: A shade basically has 3 measurements: top diameter, bottom diameter and side length. There are other measurements on complex frames which is another subject.

Here is a listing of many basic lamp shade styles:

1) Empire Lamp Shade- a round shape lamp shade with straight sloped side. The shade slope is not exaggerated but rather at a traditional angle, the most common type of shade found.

2) Bell Lamp Shade - the same as an empire lamp shade except the side is curved not straight.

3) Drum Lamp Shade - a round shape lamp shade with straight side where the top and bottom diameter are near each other crating a near cylindrical or drum type of shape.

4) Coolee Lamp Shade - a round shape lamp shade with straight or curved sloped side. The shade slope is exaggerated due the top diameter being much smaller than the bottom diameter thus resembling a Chinese coolee hat.

5) Square Lamp Shade - self explaining

6) Rectangular Lamp Shade - self explaining

7) Oval Lamp Shade - self explaining

8) Hexagon Lamp Shade - six sided lamp shade

9) Octagon Lamp Shade - eight sided lamp shade

10) Cut Corner Lamp Shade - the corners are cut straight across instead of a right angle.

11) Inverted Cut Corner Lamp Shade - the corners are cut inward in a curve instead of a right angle.

12) Out round Corner Lamp Shade - the corners are rounded outward in a curve instead of a right angle.

13) Scallop Top or Bottom Lamp Shade - the top or bottom edge is wavy or curved in a scalloped manner instead of being straight.

14) V Notch Lamp Shade - the top or bottom edge has a "V" shaped design instead of being straight.

15) Gallery Lamp Shade - the bottom edge has a wide gallery section which may have a different decorative treatment.

16) Fancy Square Lamp Shade - a square top bell shape lamp shade with square bottom where each bottom side has a single out scallop.

17) Bouillotte Lamp Shade - a short drum (or bell drum) lamp shade, named after the French card game where this lamp and shade were commonly found.

18) Junior Lamp Shade - a short drum (or bell drum) lamp shade made especially to fit a 6 way reflector floor lamp that became popular c 1930.

19) Uno Lamp Shade - any lamp shade where the shade "FITTER" is large enough to slip over or screw over the socket.

Now there are hexagon bells and squares with inverted cut corners. There are V notch bell drums and most any other combinations of features that you may imagine...

It may be obvious that this could go on limited only by our imagination and the lamp shade makers skill. Then there are custom shades in great variety and complexity.

Some say the shade makes the lamp and there is some truth in that. Just do not begin with an ugly lamp and expect your shade to redeem it !

Good luck on selecting your next lamp shade.

Lamp Shades

Lampshades are an integral part of any kind of lamp and give the lamps their decorative uniqueness and grandeur. Lampshades cover the lighting fixtures and deliver a soft glow, lending a serene and subtle beauty to the lamps. Lampshade designs vary from extremely traditional and ornate to simple trendy ones. However, irrespective of their designing pattern and style, lampshades complement lamps and fascinate homeowners.

Lampshades are made of glass, cloth, silk and other transparent materials. Various ornamental items are used to enhance the look and decorate these shades. Colorful cloth embroideries, beads, shells, paintings, fabrics, stained glass and prints are some of the most common materials used to decorate the shades. Hurricane gall shades are also popular lampshades, bearing a traditional look. These lampshades were used with non-electric lamps, such as gas or oil wick lamps. However, hurricane glass shades are now used for electric lamps as well and impart the look of an oil lamp.

Lampshades can be of various shapes, depending on the size of the lamps. These shapes may vary from round, oval, rectangular, dome, semi-circle, cylindrical and prism, to name a few. Lampshades are easy to use and can be cleaned, changed or replaced as and when necessary. However, the fancy lampshades are very delicate and require proper handling to maintain their appearance. The antique lampshades of the early Victorian periods are highly valued and favorites with the collectors. These lampshades portray the typical fringed style used in clothes for the shades and are known as Victorian fringes.

A collection of lampshades of different make, model, purpose and price can be found online. Buyers can view online catalogs or visit the local lampshade dealers for buying or replacing lampshades. However, the owners may change their lampshades with the changing time and fashion, reflecting their personal choice.

DANGEROUS! - S. Rose -
I purchased one of these from Walmart for my daughter's bedroom. One day it quit working, and I took the screws out of the bottom, expecting to have to change the lightbulb. The inside of the plastic was partially MELTED and blackened. I was horrified that this fire hazard had been in my four-year-old's room for months.

I looked it up on the web, and now the product comes with a warning that the lamp is only for "temporary" use of up to 30 DAYS! Who wants to buy a lamp / nightlight that they have to toss out after thirty days of use?!

This lamp is cute, but it's a fire hazard and not worth the risk or cash.

Commercial Lighting

There are many different types of commercial lighting on the market today and a quick look around online will surely find you what you are looking for. Shown below is small list of the different types of lighting that are commercially available.

High Bay Lighting Fixtures
This type of commercial lighting is normally used in areas with high ceilings, normally above 15 feet, and can commonly be found in places such as gyms, shops, warehouses, factories and garages. This type of commercial lighting fixture uses a technology commonly known as High Intensity Discharge (HID). These type of lamps can attain the maximum amount of lighting to cover large areas.

Low Bay Lighting Fixtures
This type of lighting is more commonly used in warehouses and churches or areas where the ceiling heights are between 15 to 20 feet. This lighting gives the maximum amount of light without putting out too much glare.

Flood Lighting
This lighting is commonly used outdoors and also uses HID technology. These lights must be very bright to cover large areas such as football fields or loading areas. These lights are normally quite cheap and can be mounted on buildings, on the ground, or on poles.

Street Lights
These lights are installed on tall poles to provide a broad spread of light for the night time. They can be seen on walkways, streets and in parking lots. The poles that these lights are installed on are normally between 6 to 13 feet high and have to be able to withstand damp and wet weather conditions. Street lights are normally programmed to shut off during daylight hours.

Lighted Advert Signs
Lights that are used to illuminated advertising signs are a great way to get your business to stand out from the crowd. These commercial lights are designed to attract the attention of passers and achieve this by using brightly coloured neon lights. Some signs blink and change colour to increase their attractiveness to potential customers.

Linear Fluorescent Lighting
This form of commercial lighting uses low wattage T5 and T8 fluorescent tubes. Fluorescent tubes are very energy efficient and lead to great cost reduction when used.

Great Price OTT LIGHT OTL13TCG for $31.95

Ott-Lite Truecolor Portable Lamp Review

This rugged little lamp is as an excellent design. The frame is sturdy and made of superior grade plastic and my lamp has gone through thousands of openings and closings in the past and has shown no appreciable wear. I've also dropped it down a height of ten feet by accident, and while I wouldn't recommend repeating that incident the unit came through without a scratch. The lamp is incredibly versatile beyond its construction, the light is strong and the light the bulb produces mimics daylight. This makes it ideal for small craft and repair jobs, and also makes it an excellent source of supplementary light for indoor plants.
The only reason I didn't rate this product 4 stars instead of a five star rating is that the cord of the light is about 4 feet. which is rather short for a work/craft light, and carrying around is tiresome. The cord can also become a problem when using it as a work lite as the cord is not detachable and can be a hazard. In my case stumbling on the cord was what caused the ten foot drop. If a relatively short non-detachable power cord isn't a factor, then I can't recommend this light enough. I may even buy another in the near future myself.

Ott-Lite Truecolor Portable Lamp Feature

  • Color: light gray
  • Dimensions: 11" high x 3 1/2" wide x 2 1/2" deep in folded position

Ott-Lite Truecolor Portable Lamp Overview

This technology makes it possible to view your work indoors as clearly as you see it outside under natural daylight any time you choose! This natural light supplement takes the guess work out of color matching helps you see the tiniest details clearly and reduces the eyestrain caused by glare. Raises 12" high when closed. Has a convenient fold-up design with a carrying handle and protective case. Includes a 13-watt compact fluorescent bulb that approximates the brightness of a 75-watt incandescent bulb.

Great little light! - Angela Brandt - San Jose, CA
I like this light even more than I thought I would. It takes up very little space and gives a great amount of light. The light isn't harsh on the eyes yet lights up your project beautifully!

I use my Ott Lite for: - Fred Auerbach -
I received my OTT LITE about two weeks ago (plus a spare bulb in case).
I am amazed at the various uses others have for this specialized light, because I bought mine for photography.
The OTT LITE is almost a household name in color printing and determining the true colors of your print.
Being an avid amateur digital photographer who loved to make my own prints, I finally bought an OTT LITE which is almost a necessity to judge prints.
I managed to use sunlight since I live in Florida, but there are a few days here and there, when the sunshine is wet.
Finally got my OTT LITE and it really has become one of those, "How did I ever manage my color without one of these before"?

Very sturdy. Hinge drag is easily adjustable, At first glance, you might think it would topple, but it is heavier than it appears, and acts like it is nailed to the table.
A heck of a buy at that price.

Ott-lite---wouldn't be without it! - Patricia M. Johnson -
I recently purchased our second Ott-lite Truecolor Portable Lamp after the bulb burned out in our first one. So along with a new replacement bulb, I ordered another lamp. We use it as a reading lamp, sewing lamp, and my husband uses it to work on various small "fix-it" projects etc. We use it so much that we needed another one! Great product!

Solar Lamp Post - Better Replacement to the Conventional Lamp

A solar lamp post is definitely an exciting accent to the exterior of your home. You can position one on the garden or the pathway. It is a welcome addition to your property as it provides safety to it as the illumination wards away any potential bad elements from breaking and trespassing into your territory. On the lighter side, this outdoor solar lighting is an excellent means of beatifying and accentuating your home exterior, showing the nice garden landscape during the evening.

Indeed, if you are still using the old conventional lamp post, it should be said that the solar lamp post is an excellent replacement. To start with, if you have your old post, you can retain it and just have the old bulb replaced with a solar lamp. Do not worry about the lamp not complementing your post as surely there is one or two of the numerous styled lamps available that will perfectly complement your old post, in style and design.

If you have to purchase the total gadget, lamp and post, you need not worry about installation as it is very easy. Just find a ground on which you can stake the post. Of course, remember that you cannot just stake it anywhere. The best place is the area where the maximum amount of sunlight can be received by your light.

An important benefit of solar lamp post is that you can have it run without using electricity or any other conventional source of power. It is all solar, and so you basically enjoy lighting for 100 percent free.

Solar post lamps are available in many various styles. Certainly there is one that perfectly matches you home and garden. Imagine having a gadget that not only provide ample illumination but also is easy on your budget and very beneficial to the environment. The latter is very true as the power coming from the sun is clean and therefore causes our environment no harm. Solar power is the clean renewable type of alternative power that might someday help us significantly if not totally independent from the conventional form of power such as carbon and fossil fuels.

What is A UNO Lamp Shade?

I know. We know. Do UNO?

Lamp Shade Fitter Styles

Over the last couple years I have noticed a geometric increase in the number of requests that we receive for a certain UNO type lamp shade.

The UNO lamp shade has been around for a long time but due to the overwhelming influence of low priced Chinese imports, this shade type is like a cold virus and is unfortunately spreading very rapidly.

First it is important to define a couple of terms. The SPIDER is the wire structure near the top rim of the shade frame which radiate outwards from the center. The FITTER is the very center section of the spider that fits onto the lamp or lamp hardware. There are different fitter types and each will be addressed in detail below.

The HARP FITTER is the most secure method used to attach a shade onto a lamp. It is a metal wire and somewhat "U" shaped hardware piece that comes in many different lengths to accommodate different shade lengths. The harp fits into a SADDLE which is another smaller (3") metal hardware piece which is built onto the lamp immediately beneath the electrical socket. When the harp is snapped into the saddle, it creates a very secure and long lasting mount for the lamp shade. Most harps have a swivel feature near the top which allows the shade to be tilted at an angle so you can aim the light for better reading and work projects.

The CLIP FITTER fitter method is a wire assembly that simply clips onto the bulb. It is normally built onto and is an integral part of the lamp shade. The clip adapter is also available as a separate component and can be attached to any shade to convert any shade to a clip on shade. This lamp shade fitter is recommended for smaller lamp shades only because it becomes very unstable when used with larger shades.

The CHIMNEY FITTER shade has a very large fitter hole in the center so that it can slip down over a glass chimney commonly found on oil lamps.

The UNO FITTER is the last type of lamp shade fitter although there are some other specialty fitters which you are unlikely to encounter. The uno shade is similar to the chimney fitter shade in that the center hole is large enough to slip down over the electrical socket or is threaded so it screws onto the rim of the electrical socket.

The uno shade has some serious issues to consider. First, it can be an electrical hazard if disturbed because it rests directly on the electrical assembly. Second, when you need to replace the uno shade you are forced to use another uno shade. Replacement uno shades are simply not available except at a very few full service lamp shops. Even then you are lucky to find even a single size available. Third, the uno shade is very unstable and when it becomes unstable you are not only ready for a new lamp shade but probably a lamp repair.

A genuine antique lamp with a uno fitter shade is a very special and separate consideration that can only be addressed on an individual basis. Do not change anything on an antique lamp without first consulting an experienced antique lamp professional.

Summary: If you have a uno lamp shade we recommend that you change it to a harp fitter lamp shade (excluding antique lamps). Simply add a saddle ($ .50) underneath the socket then select your favorite replacement shade. You will need a harp ($ 2) of the correct size which is usually (3") shorter than your shade. A lamp and shade shop will fit the shade and harp for you. You will have a much sturdier and safer lamp and shade plus changing shades in the future will be easy.
