George Shearing, "The Lamp is Low" (written 1939) "The lamp is low" is one of the standard jazz with a classic ancestors. His song was by Peter De Rose and Bert Shefter adjusted by Maurice Ravel "Pavane pour une infante defunct" (Pavane for a Dead Princess). In 1899 Ravel was commissioned to write a piece a bit 'quirky lounge piano, and "Pavane for a Dead Princess" was the result. Ravel always assured listeners that it was not a lament for a dead princess, said he chose theTitle because he liked the sound of French words "dead baby". The Pavane the first time in 1902, the immediate recognition and was sufficiently popular that Ravel orchestrated 1910, which is the version in concert halls today to hear.
