Just what you want in a piano lamp. It evenly lights two open pages of sheet music. The light is glare free. There is no light leakage at the top to hurt your eyes. It is lightweight with a heavy base so you never have to worry about it falling on the keys. Minimalist design makes it complement any piano.

I wish I had bought it here right away for a few more bucks. I found it cheaper at a piano lamp site and after dealing for many weeks with a lady who ran a fake stockless shop out of her home I finally canceled that order and got it here quickly with no hassles.

Installing a Stained Glass Lamp Above Pool Table

As with any indoor sport you need a sufficient amount of light above a pool table. Pool table lights are often placed at the ceiling above pool table. These lights must be strong enough without hurting the eyes. This way, the players can clearly see the table, as well as the balls. Most pool table tops are deep green, and with poor lighting it is difficult to see anything but the green. Not only that, but a good light over a pool table also adds to the ambiance of the room. So much that people like to add neon lights around the perimeter of the room, in the darker areas, for an added effect.

If you want to install a stained glass lamp above your pool table, you should choose a light that has at least four 100-watt light bulbs in it. Modern lamps provide sharp looks and different colors to fit any lifestyle. You should consider height of the ceiling and room capacity when choosing the right lamp.

The lamp should provide an adequate amount of light over the entire pool table. Also, the bottom of the light should hang down between 30 and 35 inches from the top of the table. Be aware that this type of lamp is usually heavy because of the thick glass and metal that frames it. You don't want a stained glass lamp to fall down from the ceiling, do you? To avoid this possibility, you'll need to secure the lamp in a special way, as opposed to a light weight lamp.

To start with, you'll need to remove any existing light before you proceed. If the light you're installing is a swag stained glass lamp that hangs from a chain on the ceiling, then you'll only have to install a metal hook for the lamp to hang on. To do this securely, you'll need to use a stud finder to locate a stud in the ceiling. You need to locate a stud as close as you can to the spot where you want the stained glass lamp to hang. Mark the found spot, and then use an electric drill to carefully bore a starter hole in the ceiling. Then, insert the metal hook and turn the threads into the ceiling as far as it will go. Finally, hang the swag stained glass lamp up on the hook, and run the decorative chain and wire up and out of the way.

On the other hand, if the stained glass lamp needs to be connected to an electrical box above it, then you'll need to install it to an existing one. If no box exists, you'll need to install one. It would be a good idea to check with your local codes and permits department before you begin. You'll need to be aware of what the specific laws are regarding the wiring. And, be sure that the electrical box you install has a stud in the middle of the fixture. Before you start this all, make sure you read and follow the manufacturer's instructions and pictures that came with the electrical box. Then, after you shut off the power to the room you're working in, you'll need to cut a hole in the ceiling for the box to go in. You'll need to run a wire, if there isn't already one, from your breaker or fuse box to the box.

Install the stained glass lamp onto the box by attaching the fixture to the electrical box. Use a hickey, which is a metal piece with a hole in the middle of it. The hickey fits over the stud and a nut is placed on it afterward. It helps to secure the fixture to the electrical box which is secured to the ceiling. Finally, make sure you have everything connected properly, and then turn the electric back on.

Home Theater Projectors - Keep That Lamp Burning

Increasingly, consumers who want to experience cinema-like viewing in their home opt for a home theater projector. These devices allow users to view their entertainment in a darkened room without the size restrictions of a television screen. However, as most owners will attest to, there is a somewhat significant maintenance expense associated with this type of set up; the expense of the lamp.

Lamp life in a projector is said to be between 2,500 and 4,000 hours but in some instances consumers have reported a lamp life as short as just a few hundred hours. With lamp replacements priced at a few hundred dollars, the shortened life span of a lamp can be an unwelcome surprise. Buyers should take heart however as there are numerous things they can do to help assure their new lamp burns brightly for as long as possible.

o Keep the projector stationary when possible. The filament within the lamp is fragile and is especially vulnerable to damage when it is hot; thus avoiding any jostling, especially when the unit is still hot, is important.

o Keep hands off of the lamp. Bare hands can leave oils on the surface. The oils can get burned onto the surface of the lamp which can cause cracking. Use of a tissue or soft cloth when removing/changing the lamp is wise.

o Turn the lamp off appropriately.

o Turn the lamp off about 5 minutes prior to turning off the projector. This allows the fan to cool the unit.

o Because turning the power on and off can stress the filament due to sudden voltage increase it is wise to avoid turning it on and off unnecessarily when taking a short break in viewing. Use of the "soft start" function can be beneficial if the projector has it.

o On the other hand, an auto standby feature can be useful to assure that the lamp is not inadvertently left burning when viewing is done.

o Keep it clean and cool. Projectors should be housed to assure they are not near a heat source and have adequate venting. There should be nothing obstructing their air intake or exhaust vent. The filter should be cleaned every 3-6 months and changed per manufacturer guidelines to assure good airflow and to keep dust off of the lamp.

As with any light source, the lamp within a projector will eventually fail and need to be replaced. However, proper use and maintenance can help to assure that the projector lamp will realize its full life expectancy rather than placing any unnecessary burden on the owner's budget.

Why Buy An Antique Lamp

First let us define an antique lamp as one from a bygone era which is a long indefinite time period. Determination of an antique lamp includes some time period designation normally in the form of "circa year". i.e. "circa 1905" which literally means "about the year 1905". So the term "antique lamp" will be used on this basis and often substituted with the term "vintage".

So you have decided to purchase a lamp. There are numerous design questions to consider such as height, girth, color, style, function and of course price. But have you seriously considered searching exclusively for a vintage lamp ? Probably not. Our entire culture is so strongly influenced by advertising of mass produced products including lamps, that we are programmed to think only in terms of what has been presented by the mass merchants. Aesthetically this has huge repercussions because we all end up owning the same home decor items and nothing is exclusive or unique. You end up buying the same lamp that your neighbor bought, that his neighbor bought and so forth.

Here is a real life story that happened just this very week. A very nice interior designer from Gastonia who specializes in fine high design home decor came into my lamp shop here in Lincolnton, North Carolina. She was looking for a unique and special lamp for one of her clients. After visiting with us and looking around for some time, she found a 1 of a kind cast metal and onyx lamp which we had designed and made here. We label our lamps individually so that our customers know a little something about them while browsing so she knew this lamp was exclusive to our store and that only one lamp had ever been made. She brought the lamp to the register and told me how much she loved the design and the fact that it was truly unique. I explained to her that we designed and made this lamp and that it was not available anywhere else. She was so happy about this and she told me of another recent lamp purchase which she had made... She had recently found this certain lamp a dealer's store and she thought it was really nice so she bought it. She had the lamp for some weeks when she was out shopping and found the exact lamp at another store. Right then it became obvious that this was a highly produced lamp and there were likely many thousands of them in stores everywhere worldwide. Let's suffice it to say that her lamp stock suddenly plunged ! She took the lamp back to the dealer immediately.

The story above exemplifies only one reason why you should consider an antique lamp. There are many more reasons to purchase an antique lamp not the least of which is quality and craftsmanship. The overwhelming majority of lamps produced today are made of resin (poly) of one sort or another. This material is wonderful in the way it can be molded and painted plus it is cheap to produce. But you will probably end up throwing these lamps away sooner or later. The material is brittle, hollow, fragile and it chips and breaks very easily. You will likely not be giving these lamps to your grand children, not even your children. This poly resin material reminds me of the chalk ware lamps from circa 1950. These lamps are rarely if ever found in one piece. They were cheap back then and they are usually worthless now. Buying a poly resin lamp is fine as long as you know that you are buying a throw away product. Antique lamps from the late 1800's - 1930 were very commonly made of the very finest quality materials such as iron, brass, bronze, marble, onyx and steel. Many of these antique lamps will still be around in another 100 years and their stock price is definitely up !

A very good reason to purchase an antique lamp is the current and future value of the lamp. Many of the antique lamps produced around 1900-1930 commonly sell for 10 - 20 times their original retail price. It is not unusual to find numerous lamps selling for 100 times the original retail price. There are some selling for incredible amounts compared to what they sold for when new - See WORLD'S MOST EXPENSIVE LAMP in the BIOGRAPHY below. See LAMP APPRAISALS PLUS LAMP HISTORY in the BIOGRAPHY below.

Finally, one of the best reasons to purchase an antique lamp is style and beauty. Many of these lamps produced during the Art Nouveau or Arts and Crafts period are magnificent and timeless and their beauty and design are mimicked throughout nearly every culture on earth. They were made with care and with pride to last for many generations to enjoy.

Mew - New terrian, Nervous, She Came Home For Christmas - Live in Copenhagen 09

Jonas Bjerre (leadsinger) sings alone on the stage, and playing piano, very touching and beautiful moment. Jonas say some different things on danish, the first one is: "Nu skal jeg forsøge mig med en svær sang" which means: "Now I will try a difficult song", and then, in the middle of the song he stop and says: "Undskyld, jeg flytter lige lampen, jeg kan simpelthen ikke se, beklager" and that means: "Sorry, I need to remove the lamp, I can't see anything.. I apoligize". When "She Came Home For Christmas" began, a sort of rush went through the whole audience, it was so beautiful and so magical. The concert was on November 28th 2009, in Kb-hallen, Copenhagen.

Antique Lamps

Antique Lamps have become very collectible over the past few years. Certain styles such as Art Deco and Victoriana have assisted this popularity along with certain makers such as Tiffany that will never go out of fashion.

Some of the most collectible lamps are oil and kerosene lamps. They can still look as beautiful and stylish today as they did 100 years ago when they were first manufactured. There is something romantic about these lamps when they are lit and show off their glow to perfection in even the most uninspiring rooms.

Be very careful when purchasing lamps with glass shades. This is the place where most of the damage is done. Slight burn marks are normal and should be accepted with any lamp with an age. Run your fingers around the rim of the shade very carefully and check for hairline cracks.

Be also very careful when purchasing supposed Antique Lamps due to the number of reproductions on the market. Where a certain area is very popular as it is with Antique Lamps then it is just a matter of time before the market is flooded with reproduction pieces.

This does not mean that reproduction antique lamps are a bad thing. If you do have an original piece which has a slightly damaged shade it would be easy to replace this with a reproduction if it was for your own use and not for resale.

The only problems come when the reproduction lamps are passed on as originals either by unsuspecting sellers or by unscrupulous dealers. Check the lamps like you would any other antique. Look for normal wear and tear on the shade. Brass fittings would be worn away due to frequent use along with the base. Owners would often polish the lamps so this would also show on a genuine antique lamp. If you suspect anything regarding the lamps true age then don't buy it.

Table & Floor Lamps - Discover the Reason Why Table & Floor Lamps Are Great Interior Decor Additions

Lamps are decor additions that are purchased for your home not only for cosmetic purposes, but also for adding light to the room. A room that is well lit is always attracting and no person wants to stay in a gentle lit area. You can brighten the mood of your day with appropriate lamp shades. If you would like to have a calming effect in your house, you need to select lamps with warming colors. A table or floor lamp can be a remarkable add-on for your house as it not solely preserves space, but as well saves money. You can produce small decorative pieces on the table that is attached the lamp.

Pick Out The Right Size

The sizing of the floor lamp that you choose is extremely key. For an area to be well lit, you need to figure out the size of the lamp you should purchase. Conservative rooms call for low height lamps while for larger rooms, you should look for large lamps. You cannot simply put a large lamp in an area that will be crowded virtually all of the time. So, it is critical that you pick out the right size corresponding to the location and size of the area. You should also consider the kind of room before picking out the lamp because sleeping areas and living areas takes different lighting.

Match The Lamp With Other Interior Decorations

As you rely on the table or floor lamp to illuminate the whole room, you should think of the other decor you have already acquired in your house. Fitting the theme is really critical because matching colors need to be employed to set the right mood. Aside from thinking of other articles of furniture in the room, you need to also consider the color themes and floor when you pick out lamp floors for your room. Incompatible colors do not feel appealing and make a bad mood in the room. Some of the great choices are Halogen Floor Lamps with many different styles of decoration that suits on your taste.

Handel Lamp History

Philip Julius Handel first established the Handel Company in Meriden, Connecticut in 1876. They specialized in high quality reverse painted lamp shades and were generally considered a less expensive alternative to the Tiffany lamp popularized by Louis Comfort Tiffany. They also made leaded glass shades similar to Tiffany as well as vases, humidor boxes and other decorative objects. The most popular lamps of the Art Nouveau 1890-1920 and the Art Deco period 1920-1939 were Tiffany, Handel, Pairpoint and Duffner & Kimberly.

Philip Handel (age 19) and Adolph Eydam (age 21) formed a partnership in 1885 and created the "Eydam and Handel Company" in Meriden, Connecticut specializing in glass decorating and lamp manufacturing. They used lamp bases from other suppliers not their own lamp bases. In 1892 the partnership ended and the company later moved to larger facilities in New York city in 1893 and was known as "Philip J. Handel" and later as "Handel and Company". In 1902 they opened their own foundry and began producing their own lamp bases. The Handel Company was incorporated on June 11, 1903 and Philip J. Handel, Albert Parlow, and Antone Teich were the principals. In 1906, Philip J. Handel married Fannie Hirschfield Handel his second wife. She became the company's president upon Philip Handel's death in 1914. In 1918 she remarried and in 1919 William F. Handel, Philip's cousin took control of the company.

Following World War I was a period of tremendous growth. The economy was roaring and the company had assembled a very impressive and talented group of artists and craftsmen. However, the Great Depression drastically changed the company's fortunes and by 1929 the company was struggling. The company ceased production completely in 1936. The Handel Lamp Company was the very finest maker of reverse-painted lamps. Handel also made some leaded glass lamps. The company is a prime example of fine American quality craftsmanship.

Handel bases were most commonly made of a zinc alloy, spelter with a bronze patina or finish. Some were made of genuine bronze. The marking was commonly the company name on the bottom of the base. The markings consisted of raised letters and/or a label. Sometimes the marking would be underneath the base or sometimes on top of the the base. Lamp shades were marked on metal components and/or on the glass itself. Some of the glass pieces are signed by the artists.

Many of the medium to larger Handel lamp bases were wired with multiple sockets which were operated by pull chains that had small and various shaped pull balls on the ends of the chain.

It has long been a common practice to match slag glass lamp shades, Tiffany type shades and others to various lamp bases that were not the original. Another common practice has been to place an unsigned shade on a signed Handel lamp base and pass the entire lamp off as a "Handel". Many if not most lamps and shades are referred to as Handel lamps simply because the style is similar to that of an original Handel lamp. Experts today suggest that about 90% of all lamps called Handel were not actually made by Handel. There are many lamps that are signed but that are not authentic. Identification of Handel leaded lamps is a subjective process that few people are qualified to do.

Given the company's history it may be difficult to prove the negative: i.e. that a particular lamp is NOT a Handel. But as usual, money speaks and you will find that a Handel lamp and shade with correct markings, attributes and documentation commands a very premium price as compared to any lamp that is "attributed to Handel".

For instance, some of Handel's small and simple desk and simple piano lamps have recently sold for around $500. Generally the more complex ones sell for over $2,000. There are some rare ones that have sold for over $80,000.

Some Handel glass artists are highly regarded and their works bring a premium price. Their signatures can be seen on some Handel lamp shades. Among these Handel artists are Bailey, Bedigie, Broggi, Gubisch, Matzow, Palme, and Parlow and Runge.

Home Energy Savings Tips: Compact Fluorescent Lamps

Because electrical lighting consumes nearly 15% of a household's electricity use, you may wish to learn about some energy efficient lighting alternatives. Compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) are one you should consider.

Their design blends the energy efficiency of fluorescent lighting with the convenience and interchangeability of incandescent fixtures. CFLs will fit nearly any fixture designed for an incandescent bulb.

CFLs can replace incandescent lights approximately 3-4 times their wattage, which means you can save up to 75% of the lighting energy. Although CFLs cost 10-20 times more than comparable incandescent bulbs, they last 10-15 times as long. In other words, over the long term you save lots of money by paying more up front.

Compact fluorescent lamps work a lot like regular fluorescent lamps. They're comprised of two parts: a magnetic or electronic ballast, and a gas-filled tube. The gas inside the tube glows with ultraviolet light when electricity from the ballast runs through it. This in turn triggers a white phosphor coating on the inside of the tube, emitting visible light all the way through the surface of the tube.

The type of compact fluorescent lamps which use magnetic ballasts flicker when they start, like regular fluorescents do. They also weigh more than CFL's with electronic ballasts, which may make them too heavy for some light fixtures. Electronic ballasts are more expensive, but light immediately. They are also more efficient than magnetic ballasts. Most currently available CFLs have electronic ballasts.

Because compact fluorescent lamps are designed to operate within certain temperature ranges, temperatures outside the range cause reduced light output. A CFL's temperature range can found printed on most lamp packages. Although there are models offered for outdoor use, most are for indoor applications. You can install outdoor CFLs in enclosed fixtures to reduce the effects of colder temperatures and wind chill.

This type of lighting is at its most cost effective in areas where lights are left on for long periods of time. In locations where lights are turned on for short periods of time, such as in closets and pantries, an incandescent bulb may be a better choice. Since compact fluorescent lamps do not need to be changed often, they are perfect for hard-to-reach areas like ceiling fixtures.

Try out a CFL for a test run and see how much energy you save.

Check Out GE Lamps 41028 60-Watt A19, Soft White, 4 Pack for $1.95

GE Lamps 41028 60-Watt A19, Soft White, 4 Pack Review

Well, I finally used up the last of the whale oil that I inherited from my great grandpappy, and I found that the only gadget giving off light in my house was this here computer monitor. But computer monitors are way too expensive to put in every room, so I went looking for another way to get light into my house at night.

For years I had marvelled at these strange looking socket type thingies with what look like screw threads, only bigger, sticking out of the ceiling of many of the rooms of my house. What were they for? I desperately started searching the Internet until I stumbled on these here "lamps". They look awful funny for lamps. My lamps are way bigger and have pedestals and openings for lighting the wicks, but not these. These are like bulbs, flower bulbs, but they supposedly give light. "Gee", I thought. Maybe they should be called "light bulbs". Just an idea.

So, I ordered a big box of these "lamps" and as soon as I got 'em I started screwing them into these funny socket things in my ceiling. Some of them went on as I got them screwed all the way in, and some only went on after I jiggled these little plastic things that stick out of many of the walls in my house. Guess I figured out what they're for too!

Anyhoo, now I've got light wherever I want it an whenever I want it. Some of my friends are into electrically generated light too, but they get their light from these piggy tail looking things. They're envious of the fact that my bulbs have much softer light and come on immediately and don't make strange buzzy noises. They're amazed to find out that when I accidentally break one of these new "lamps", I can just sweep it up and throw it away without worrying about the gas inside them. Maybe they should switch to these! Now that I have, I don't know what I'd do without them.

very good light bulbs - Matthew G. Sherwin - last seen screaming at Amazon customer service
GE Soft White 60 Watt Light Bulbs are perfect for any lamp in your household that needs a 60 watt light bulb of medium strength. This "soft white" light bulb burns brighter than a dimmed light bulb; and it is less harsh on the eyes than a light bulb of greater strength. The bulb lasts 1,500 hours--excellent value and efficiency! A single light bulb lights a 10 foot by 10 foot room fairly well.

Insert a new light bulb into the socket of the lamp (or whatever needs the light bulb) and screw it in until you feel that the bulb is snug and secure in the socket. Then turn on the lamp or whatever device you're using and--voilà! Your bulb works for the next 1,500 hours. That can be months if you're careful with your energy bill.

The bulbs stay fresh for several months at least after you buy them; this is a great feature if you need to stock up on light bulbs for any reason. Obviously, these electric light bulbs must never go near water and or any other liquid. Dispose of them carefully so that any glass won't break and hurt anyone if they walk around barefoot in the house.

Overall, these 60 watt "soft white" light bulbs by GE fit the bill very nicely. They are economical, easy to install and remove and they stay "fresh" for months after you purchase them. They take up very little room in any closet while you're waiting to use them, too. I highly recommend these light bulbs for lamps or vanities or anything else that requires 60 watt light bulbs.
